   At the Haven Of Rest thrift store in Anderson, South Carolina, I used to see stray specimens from what I guess was a remarkably ill-conceived mass-market venture from some time in the eighties that involved repurposing song lyrics as greeting-card inscriptions, one of which was a birthday card that said, on the front, “New Toy!” and opened to “To keep your head expanding!” I know it sounds like I’m making this up, but I swear I’m not.

   There was another one with some Bruce Springsteen shit, but I can’t remember what it was.
